How to Create a Shareable Online Resume and Portfolio Link
Why a clean web link to your resume beats a PDF attachment in cold emails and DMs, what to put on a digital portfolio page, and how to make one in minutes.
When you message a recruiter on LinkedIn, email a hiring manager directly or share your profile in a WhatsApp group, a PDF attachment is often the weakest way to send your resume. A clean web link works better in most of these situations.
Why a link beats a PDF attachment
- It opens instantly on a phone. Many recruiters read messages on mobile, where attachments need downloading and zooming.
- Cold emails with attachments look riskier. Some people won't open attachments from strangers, and some email filters treat them with suspicion.
- It's always up to date. Update your resume once and every link you've shared shows the new version. No more "Resume_final_v3_updated.pdf".
- It fits anywhere: LinkedIn messages, your email signature, your LinkedIn Featured section, a WhatsApp status, or the "website" field on job applications.
- It can show more than a page: featured projects, a short About section and links to your work.
A PDF still matters: when a job portal asks you to upload one, upload one. The link is for everywhere else.
What makes a good online resume page
- A simple, readable address, ideally with your name.
- Your full resume, readable on a phone without zooming.
- A short About section in the first person: who you are and what you want next.
- Featured work: two to six links to projects, case studies, GitHub repositories, articles or designs.
- A professional photo, if you want one. Optional; useful for personal branding, not required.
- Privacy control: you decide whether search engines can list the page, and you can turn it off.
Resume page or portfolio?
- A resume page is your resume on the web. Best for most roles: sales, operations, finance, HR, engineering.
- A portfolio adds an introduction and featured work above the resume. Best for designers, developers, writers, marketers, data scientists and anyone whose work can be shown.
How to use your link in a cold message
"Hi Priya, I saw the Data Analyst opening on your team. I've spent three years building pricing and retention dashboards for an e-commerce company, which seems close to what the role needs. My resume and two dashboard case studies are here: [your link]. Would you be open to a 10-minute chat?"
Short, specific, and the link does the heavy lifting.
